The Best Proposal Spots in Markham and Richmond Hill

The best proposal spots in Markham and Richmond Hill are Toogood Pond and Main Street in Unionville, the Rouge Valley trails, Mill Pond Park and Lake Wilcox in Richmond Hill, and the grounds of the David Dunlap Observatory for a proposal under the stars. Each is free or close to it, and all are within about 30 to 45 minutes of downtown Toronto outside rush hour.

York Region gets overlooked in proposal guides because people assume the good spots are all downtown. They aren't. Markham and Richmond Hill have something the waterfront rarely offers: quiet. You can walk a pond loop on a November weekday and see a handful of dog walkers, which is exactly what you want when you're about to get down on one knee. Below are the spots we'd send a friend to, with practical notes on timing, crowds and what to check before you go.

Where to propose in Markham

Toogood Pond Park, Unionville

If you only pick one spot in Markham, make it this one. Toogood Pond is a large park at the north end of Unionville with a walkway of roughly 1.4 km looping the pond, a small dam and waterfall, a pedestrian bridge and plenty of benches. The Oak Ridges Trail Association describes the terrain as an easy mix of forest, meadow and park trail, so it works in dress shoes.

The footbridge near the dam is the natural moment. Walk the loop in the direction that brings you there last, so you aren't rushing. On a weekday afternoon in late fall you may have long stretches to yourselves. Weekends are busier, especially when the weather is mild.

Main Street Unionville

Unionville's main street grew up around Union Mills in the 1840s, and the heritage buildings now hold restaurants, cafés and small shops. It is a five-minute walk from Toogood Pond, which makes the classic Markham plan easy: propose at the pond, then walk down to a dinner reservation on Main Street. In December the street is dressed up for the holidays, and it is one of the prettiest winter walks in York Region.

Book the table under a name your partner won't notice if they glance at your phone. It sounds paranoid until it saves the surprise.

Rouge Valley Trail and Rouge National Urban Park

For couples who'd rather be on a trail than in a village, the Rouge Valley Trail in Markham runs about 7 km one way on a mix of pavement and gravel, with bridges, a boardwalk section and river views. Further east, Bob Hunter Memorial Park is part of Rouge National Urban Park and has trails along Little Rouge Creek. A boardwalk or bridge over the river makes a good backdrop. Check for trail closures before you go, as sections are sometimes shut for restoration work.

Milne Dam Conservation Park

Milne Dam is Markham's largest park, with wetlands, a reservoir, bird watching and picnic sites. It suits a picnic proposal in spring or early fall. There is an entry fee on weekends and holidays, so check current rates and hours before you go, and aim for a weekday if you want it quiet.

Where to propose in Richmond Hill

Mill Pond Park

Mill Pond Park sits just off Yonge Street in old Richmond Hill, named for a sawmill the pond once powered. There's a boardwalk around the water, a gazebo, benches and swans. The gazebo is the obvious spot, and it's a good one.

Mill Pond is also one of the better winter options north of the city. When the pond freezes solid, locals skate on it, and the community has run a winter carnival there in past years. A proposal on skates is memorable, but have a backup plan: natural ice depends on the weather and on the City's safety calls, so never go onto the ice unless it's open.

Lake Wilcox Park

Lake Wilcox is a kettle lake on the Oak Ridges Moraine in the north end of Richmond Hill, formed when glaciers retreated. The park has a boardwalk that curves out over part of the lake. Come at sunset, when the light runs across the water. In summer it's busy with paddlers and families, so late fall and early spring are quieter. Parking is paid in the warmer months.

David Dunlap Observatory

For a couple who once spent a first date looking at the night sky, this one is hard to beat. The David Dunlap Observatory is owned by the City of Richmond Hill and houses a 74-inch telescope in its dome. The surrounding Observatory Park is open year-round, and the City runs free outdoor stargazing parties in good weather.

The buildings themselves are open only on set visiting days or for registered programs, so a proposal in the park grounds is the simpler option. If you want a photographer, the City issues photo permits for the site; apply well ahead, since requests can take up to ten business days to process.

Bond Lake

Further up Yonge Street, Bond Lake is another glacial kettle lake inside a conservation reserve, with quiet trails and few facilities. It suits an outdoorsy couple and a low-key proposal. The parking lot is small, there are no washrooms, and it fills early on summer weekends.

Planning tips for a York Region proposal

  • Watch the sunset time. In November and December the sun sets before 5 pm in the GTA. If you want golden light at Toogood Pond or Lake Wilcox, plan for mid-afternoon.
  • Have a cold-weather backup. A heritage restaurant on Main Street Unionville works as a plan B in any weather. Our guide to winter proposal spots in Toronto has more ideas if you're proposing in December.
  • Hiding a photographer. Pond loops and boardwalks give a photographer an easy spot to "just be walking by". Agree on a signal in advance.
  • Check permits. Public parks are fine for a simple proposal. Decor, setups, drones or professional shoots may need permission, so contact the city or park first.
  • Plan the celebration. Many York Region families want to celebrate together straight after. Tell one trusted person the time and let them gather everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to propose in Markham?

Toogood Pond Park in Unionville. The pond loop, footbridge and waterfall make a pretty setting, and Main Street Unionville is a short walk away for dinner afterwards.

Where can I propose in Richmond Hill?

Mill Pond Park's gazebo and boardwalk, the boardwalk at Lake Wilcox at sunset, or the grounds of the David Dunlap Observatory for a night-sky proposal.

Is there a good winter proposal spot in York Region?

Main Street Unionville is lovely in December, and Mill Pond Park becomes a skating spot when the ice is safe and open. Keep an indoor dinner reservation as a backup.

Do I need a permit to propose in a Markham or Richmond Hill park?

Not for a simple proposal in a public park. Setups with decor, professional photo shoots or drones may need a permit, so check with the city first. Richmond Hill issues photo permits for the David Dunlap Observatory site.

How far ahead should I order the engagement ring?

For a custom ring, allow at least 6 to 8 weeks: time to settle the design plus 4 to 6 weeks for casting, setting and polishing. Our proposal planning timeline breaks it down.
