Moissanite and lab diamonds are the two most popular non-mined alternatives for engagement rings, and buyers shopping in this space frequently face the same question: what's actually different between them, and does it matter which you choose?

The two stones look remarkably similar to the naked eye. Both are lab-grown. Both avoid the supply chain concerns of mined diamonds. But they are genuinely different gemstones with different properties, different price points, and different long-term characteristics. Here's an honest comparison.

What They Actually Are

Moissanite is silicon carbide — a distinct gemstone that is chemically different from diamond. It occurs naturally (extremely rarely, in meteorite impact sites) but is commercially produced in labs. It has been available as a jewelry stone since the late 1990s.

Lab diamond is chemically identical to a mined diamond — pure crystallized carbon with the same atomic structure. It's grown in a laboratory using one of two methods: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). Grading organizations (GIA, IGI) certify lab diamonds using the same 4Cs system as mined diamonds.

The key fact: moissanite and lab diamond are different materials. Lab diamond is a diamond; moissanite is not.

Hardness and Durability

Diamond (mined or lab) is the hardest substance on earth at 10 on the Mohs scale. Moissanite is 9.25 — the second hardest gemstone used in jewelry. In practice, for daily wear in an engagement ring, both are completely appropriate and both will last a lifetime with normal care.

The practical difference in scratch resistance between 9.25 and 10 is not meaningful in everyday wear. Neither stone will scratch from contact with most materials encountered in normal daily life.

Brilliance and Fire: The Visual Difference That Actually Matters

This is the most noticeable difference between moissanite and lab diamond:

Moissanite has a higher refractive index (2.65–2.69) than diamond (2.42), which means it bends light more intensely and produces more rainbow-coloured flashes — what gemologists call "fire." Moissanite sparkles more colourfully and more intensely than diamond in certain lighting.

Lab diamond produces the same optical characteristics as a mined diamond: brilliant white light return with more subdued rainbow flashes. The diamond's brilliance is generally considered more classic and less "flashy" than moissanite's.

Whether moissanite's additional fire is a pro or con is entirely a matter of personal preference. Some buyers love the vivid sparkle; others find it too intense and prefer diamond's cooler, more traditional optical properties. If possible, see both in person before deciding — the difference is visible and meaningful to most buyers.

Price: The Most Significant Practical Difference

• Lab diamond: Typically $800–2,500 USD for the loose stone, depending on cut, colour, and clarity grades

Lab diamonds have dropped significantly in price over the past several years as production has scaled; they're no longer the premium they once were over moissanite, but moissanite still has a meaningful price advantage at equivalent sizes.

Moissanite does not typically come with GIA or IGI certification — instead, quality moissanite is graded internally by the manufacturer (Charles & Colvard's Forever One is the leading branded moissanite, with its own quality standards). The quality standards for DEF VVS1 moissanite are consistent and well-established, but there's no equivalent third-party paper.

Which Should You Choose?

The answer depends on what matters most:

• Choose moissanite if: Budget is a genuine consideration; you want maximum sparkle and don't mind (or love) the colourful fire; a certified diamond stone is not important to you.
• Choose lab diamond if: You want a certified stone that is chemically a diamond; the traditional, cooler optical character of diamond is what appeals; you're willing to pay the premium for the certification and the "diamond" designation.
• Choose mined diamond if: Traditional symbolism and the natural origin of the stone matter to you, and budget allows.
