How to Care for Your Moissanite Ring: Cleaning, Storage & What to Avoid

Moissanite is one of the most durable gemstones used in jewelry — it ranks 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it second only to diamond. That durability means a moissanite ring can genuinely last a lifetime with normal wear. But "durable" doesn't mean "maintenance-free." Like any fine piece of jewelry, a moissanite ring benefits from some basic care habits that keep it looking the way it did when it first arrived.

Everyday Cleaning at Home

The most effective and safest home cleaning method for a moissanite ring is also the simplest: warm water, a small amount of mild dish soap, and a soft-bristled brush (a baby toothbrush works well). Soak the ring for a few minutes, gently scrub around and beneath the stone and along the band, rinse thoroughly under clean water, and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Doing this once every week or two keeps oils, lotion, and everyday buildup from accumulating on and beneath the stone. Moissanite's high refractive index — the property that gives it its intense sparkle — is most visible when the stone is clean. Residue beneath the stone blocks light and visibly dulls the brilliance.

What to Avoid

A few things to keep away from your ring:

  • Harsh chemicals. Chlorine, bleach, and abrasive cleaning products can damage gold settings and degrade the metal over time. Remove your ring before cleaning with household chemicals or spending extended time in a pool or hot tub.
  • Ultrasonic cleaners — with caution. Ultrasonic cleaners are generally safe for moissanite stones, but can loosen prongs or damage certain setting types (particularly pavé settings with many small stones) over repeated use. If you have a pavé band or a complex setting, check with a jeweler before using one regularly.
  • Lotions, perfumes, and hairspray. These coat the stone and accumulate under the setting. The habit of putting your ring on last — after applying everything else — makes a noticeable difference over time.
  • Hard impacts. While moissanite is highly scratch-resistant, it can chip if struck sharply at a specific angle, particularly at the girdle (the widest point of the stone). Activities involving heavy impact to the hands (contact sports, heavy lifting, construction work) are best done with the ring off.

Storage

When you're not wearing the ring, store it somewhere it won't be scratched or scratch other jewelry. A fabric-lined ring box or a small jewelry pouch is ideal. Moissanite can scratch softer gemstones (most colored stones and pearls rank below 7 on the Mohs scale), so keeping it separated from other pieces is worth the habit.

Avoid leaving fine jewelry loose in a drawer or bag where it can rub against other pieces or hard surfaces. The stone may be durable, but the metal setting is not immune to dents or scratches from impact.

Professional Cleaning and Inspection

Beyond home cleaning, a professional inspection once a year keeps the ring in good long-term condition. A jeweler can check the security of prongs (which hold the stone in place and can loosen gradually with wear), clean areas that home cleaning can't reach, and catch any issues before they become problems.

At Toronto Fine Jewelry, all Canadian orders include free lifetime cleaning and polishing. Bring the ring in to our Vaughan studio and we'll restore it to its original condition — the same quality clean it received before it left us. It's one of the most practical policies we offer, and one that other jewelers don't typically match.

A Note on Metal Care

The stone usually outlasts the setting without care — but the setting is what holds the stone. 14K and 18K gold are durable, but gold does develop a patina and fine scratches over years of daily wear. Polishing restores the surface; rhodium plating on white gold wears off over time and can be reapplied. Rose gold develops a slightly deeper, warmer tone over years — which many wearers prefer. None of this is damage; it's the natural aging of worn metal.

If you have questions about caring for a specific setting style, or want to book a cleaning, reach out through the collection page or visit us in Vaughan. A clean ring is a better ring — and with moissanite, the difference between clean and coated is visible from across the room.
