Christmas and Winter Proposal Ideas in Ottawa (2026–27 Guide)

The best places to propose in Ottawa this winter are the Rideau Canal Skateway during Winterlude (January 29 to February 15, 2027), the refrigerated Rink of Dreams at City Hall, the Rideau Hall rink, a horse-drawn carriage ride through Alight at Night at Upper Canada Village, and a private moment in the car at Magic of Lights. For a Christmas proposal, approve your ring design by November 13, 2026.

Ottawa might be the most winter-proof city in Canada for a proposal. It has the country's most famous skating surface, two free refrigerated rinks downtown that do not depend on the weather, and a run of light festivals within an hour's drive. Our year-round Ottawa proposal guide covers the Corktown Footbridge, Major's Hill Park and Lac Meech. This guide is only about the cold months: what is on for the 2026–27 season, the dates we could confirm, and how to make each spot work when it is minus 15 and you are wearing mitts.

Where should you propose in Ottawa at Christmas?

Alight at Night at Upper Canada Village

If you are willing to drive about an hour from downtown, this is the most romantic Christmas option in the region. Upper Canada Village in Morrisburg is a recreated 19th-century village, and for its 25th season it is lit with more than a million lights. According to Upper Canada Village's Alight at Night page, it runs on select nights from November 27, 2026 to January 2, 2027 (November 27 to 29, December 3 to 6, 10 to 13 and 17 to 23, then December 26 to January 2), from 5 to 9 pm. Adult tickets are $18 plus HST, sold online only in timed slots, and the village says most nights sell out.

The detail that makes it work for a proposal is the horse-drawn carriage ride, listed at $200. That buys you a private ride through the lit village, which is a far better setting for a question than a busy path. Book the carriage when you buy your tickets, and treat the date as fixed, because tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. If the weather closes the village, it posts on its social accounts and emails ticket holders.

Magic of Lights at Wesley Clover Parks

Ottawa Tourism lists Magic of Lights from November 20, 2026 to January 2, 2027 in the west end at Wesley Clover Parks. It is a drive-through display along a two-kilometre route, and last season the park described more than two million lights and what it called Ontario's longest light tunnel. Tickets are sold per vehicle.

It sounds unromantic until you think it through. You are warm, alone, and nobody is watching. Pull the ring out as you enter the light tunnel. This is the best choice for a partner who would hate a public proposal, and the easiest one to keep secret: "let's go see the lights" gives nothing away.

The Ottawa Christmas Market at Lansdowne

Ottawa Tourism's event calendar lists the European-style Ottawa Christmas Market at Lansdowne for November 20 to 22, 2026, with food, warm drinks and vendor kiosks. Confirm hours on the market's own site, since listings have varied. A market proposal works best as a stop on a date night rather than in the busiest aisle. Lansdowne's refrigerated skating court sits beside the Aberdeen Pavilion, so you can step away from the crowd for the moment itself.

Winter Lights Across Canada

Canadian Heritage lights up the Capital Region each December, and Ottawa Tourism describes nearly 300,000 lights. The 2026 start date had not been announced when we wrote this. A walk along the lit landmarks between Parliament Hill and the canal after dinner is free, easy, and lets you pick a quiet corner on the spot. Check the Winter Lights Across Canada page in late November for dates.

Can you propose while skating in Ottawa?

Yes, and Ottawa has more good options than any city in the country. The important thing is choosing between natural ice, which looks spectacular but opens on the weather's schedule, and refrigerated ice, which you can count on.

The Rideau Canal Skateway

The National Capital Commission describes the Skateway as 7.8 kilometres long and the world's largest skating rink, on a canal that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is free and open 24 hours a day once the ice is ready, which is usually January to early March. It will almost certainly not be open at Christmas, so plan a canal proposal for January or February.

Winterlude runs January 29 to February 15, 2027, according to Ottawa Tourism. The festival weekends are busy near downtown. For a quieter stretch, skate south toward Dow's Lake, or go on a weekday morning. Propose at the edge of the ice, never the middle, and stop at one of the heated cabins afterwards to warm up.

Rink of Dreams at City Hall

Ottawa Tourism lists the Rink of Dreams in front of City Hall as refrigerated and free, open roughly December to mid-March from 7 am to 11 pm, with coloured lighting after dark and skate rentals on weekends. Because the ice is refrigerated, it is the safest skating plan for a December proposal date you cannot move.

Rideau Hall rink

The historic rink on the grounds of the Governor General's residence got a refrigerated ice surface in 2025. Last season the Governor General's office listed free public skating from November 22 to March 29, on weekday evenings and weekend afternoons, with a closure over the holidays from December 22 to January 2. The 2026–27 schedule may differ, so check gg.ca before you go, and expect the holiday closure to rule out Christmas week itself.

Forest skating trails

From mid-December, weather permitting, a few trails around the city give you a skate through the trees. Ottawa Tourism lists Icelynd in Stittsville, with over two kilometres of partly lit trails (bring your own skates), RiverOak Estates about 30 minutes southeast, with a three-kilometre loop and rentals, and Le Sentier du Petit Pingouin at the Touraine Golf Club in Gatineau, with more than five kilometres of trail. These are quieter than the canal, which is exactly what you want when you are about to kneel.

What are the best indoor proposal spots in Ottawa in winter?

Ottawa in January can be brutally cold, so have a warm backup ready.

  • A downtown dinner. Many Ottawa restaurants will help time a proposal with dessert if you call a few weeks ahead. Ask for a quieter table, and book early for Christmas week, New Year's Eve and Valentine's weekend.
  • The Museum's Christmas Market. Ottawa Tourism lists a free holiday market at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau from November 26 to 29, 2026, in the Grand Hall. It is warm and calm on weekday afternoons.
  • Somewhere with a view of the lights. A hotel room or private dining room facing Parliament or the canal turns the Winter Lights display into a backdrop without anyone needing to take off a glove.

Tips for an Ottawa winter proposal

  • Pick two dates for anything on natural ice. The Skateway and the forest trails open when the cold allows. Refrigerated rinks are the fallback.
  • Plan around early sunsets. In late December the sun sets around 4:20 pm in Ottawa. Light festivals are an evening plan; daylight photos are an early-afternoon one.
  • Keep the box in a zipped inside pocket. On ice or snow, hold the ring over your partner's hand, never over open ground.
  • Bring hand warmers. Your partner will have to take a mitt off to try the ring on.
  • Get the size right before you go. Fingers shrink in the cold, so a ring that feels loose outside may fit perfectly indoors. Our guide to finding her ring size secretly helps.

When do you need to order the ring for a Christmas, Winterlude or Valentine's proposal?

Every ring we make is handcrafted after you approve a 3D design, and casting, setting and polishing take 4 to 6 weeks from that approval. Counting back six weeks from each date, as of October 27, 2026:

  • Christmas Eve or Christmas Day: approve your design by Friday, November 13, 2026. A week earlier is safer, since holiday shipping to Ottawa can be slow.
  • New Year's Eve: approve by Thursday, November 19, 2026.
  • Last night of Alight at Night (January 2): approve by Saturday, November 21, 2026.
  • Opening weekend of Winterlude (January 29): approve by Friday, December 18, 2026.
  • Valentine's Day 2027: approve by Sunday, January 3, 2027, and ideally in mid-December.
  • The Ottawa Christmas Market (November 20 to 22): a new custom design started today will not be ready in time. If that weekend matters to you, ask us about ready designs, or move the proposal to Magic of Lights or Alight at Night later in the season.

Our proposal planning timeline breaks the schedule down week by week.

Frequently asked questions

When is Winterlude 2027?

Is the Rideau Canal open for skating at Christmas?

Usually not. The NCC says the Skateway's season normally runs from January to early March. For a December skating proposal, use a refrigerated rink such as the Rink of Dreams at City Hall or the Lansdowne skating court.

When is Alight at Night at Upper Canada Village in 2026?

Select nights from November 27, 2026 to January 2, 2027, from 5 to 9 pm. Adult tickets are $18 plus HST and must be bought online in advance. A horse-drawn carriage ride is $200.

What is a private way to propose in Ottawa in winter?

Driving through Magic of Lights at Wesley Clover Parks lets you propose in your own warm car, away from crowds. A booked carriage ride at Alight at Night is another private option.

How early should I order an engagement ring for a Christmas proposal in Ottawa?

Custom rings take 4 to 6 weeks after design approval, so approve your design by November 13, 2026 for Christmas, and a week earlier to allow for shipping to Ottawa.
