The Best Proposal Spots in Quebec's Eastern Townships

The best places to propose in Quebec's Eastern Townships are North Hatley on Lake Massawippi, the shores of Lake Memphrémagog near Magog and the Saint-Benoît-du-Lac abbey, the trails of Mont-Orford National Park, the Coaticook Gorge suspension bridge, and the dark skies of Mont-Mégantic. Most are an easy weekend drive from Montreal.

The Eastern Townships (Cantons-de-l'Est in French) sit in southern Quebec, between Montreal and the Vermont border. The region is a mix of lake villages, farmland, vineyards and low mountains, and it has been a weekend escape for Montrealers for well over a century. For a proposal, that means you get scenery that changes completely from season to season, plenty of inns to turn the question into a full getaway, and far fewer crowds than Old Montreal or Mont-Tremblant.

Below are seven spots worth considering, with what we'd want to know about each before planning the moment.

Where should you propose in the Eastern Townships?

1. North Hatley and Lake Massawippi

North Hatley is the main village on Lake Massawippi, a long, narrow lake of about 14 km whose name comes from an Abenaki word for "the big deep lake." Wealthy American families built summer estates here in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the village still has that old-resort feel: a small harbour at the north end of the lake, a handful of galleries and restaurants, and two well-known lakeside inns, Manoir Hovey and the Ripplecove.

For a proposal, the village waterfront at sunset is the obvious choice. If you'd like something more private, book a lake-view room or dinner at one of the inns and ask in advance what they can do to help; many hotels are used to quiet requests like a table by the window or a bottle of something cold waiting in the room.

2. The Lake Memphrémagog waterfront in Magog

Lake Memphrémagog is the region's big lake. It runs south across the border into Vermont, and the town of Magog sits on its northern tip with cafés, shops and a walkable waterfront. It's an easy, relaxed place to propose: a walk along the water in the evening, then dinner in town.

Lake lore adds a bit of fun if your partner likes a story. Locals have been reporting sightings of a lake creature nicknamed Memphré since the early 1800s. If the two of you have a running joke about Nessie, this might be the place.

3. Around the Abbaye de Saint-Benoît-du-Lac

Further down the west shore of Memphrémagog, the Abbey of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac is a working Benedictine monastery with a striking bell tower set above the lake. Visitors can tour the church, attend the monks' sung prayers, and buy the cheeses and cider made on site.

This is an active religious community, so the church itself is not the place for a proposal. The surrounding grounds and the drive along the lake are lovely, though, and a stop at the abbey shop for cheese makes a good picnic for a lakeside proposal somewhere quieter nearby.

4. Mont-Orford National Park

Mont-Orford National Park, between Magog and Sherbrooke, gives you hiking trails, lakes and lookouts in the warmer months and skiing, cross-country trails and snowshoeing in winter. A proposal at a viewpoint after a morning hike suits couples who'd rather earn the view than drive to it.

Practical notes: check the park's current trail conditions before you go, wear proper footwear, and keep the ring box in a zipped inner pocket rather than a backpack side pouch. In late September and early October, Orford is one of the most popular fall-colour destinations in the region, so weekday mornings are your best chance at a quiet summit.

5. The Coaticook Gorge suspension bridge

The pedestrian suspension bridge at Parc de la Gorge de Coaticook stretches 169 metres across the gorge. When it opened in 1989 it was listed by Guinness World Records as the longest suspended footbridge in the world, a title it held until 2006. Proposing halfway across, with the river below, is memorable. It's also not for anyone nervous about heights, so know your partner.

The park also hosts Foresta Lumina, a 2.6 km illuminated night walk designed by Montreal studio Moment Factory. A proposal at the end of the trail, after an hour of lights and storytelling in the forest, is about as cinematic as it gets in the Townships. It runs seasonally, so check the park's dates and buy tickets ahead.

6. Mont-Mégantic and the dark-sky reserve

Mont-Mégantic National Park, in the eastern part of the region, is home to the ASTROLab and an observatory, and the area around it was designated an International Dark Sky Reserve to protect its night sky. On a clear night, the stars here look nothing like what you see from Toronto or Montreal.

A proposal under the Milky Way is a beautiful idea, but plan carefully. Night access and observatory programming are limited to certain evenings, the summit is cold even in summer, and a phone flashlight and a ring box are a fiddly combination in the dark. Bring a red-light headlamp and a warm blanket, and have a backup date in case of cloud.

7. A vineyard on the Route des Vins

The Eastern Townships Wine Route links dozens of vineyards, including well-known names like Vignoble de l'Orpailleur near Dunham and Domaine des Côtes d'Ardoise. A tasting or a picnic among the vines in late summer or early fall makes a relaxed setting that doesn't feel staged. If you have a specific vineyard in mind, call ahead: some are happy to suggest a quiet corner of the property, and they'll know when the harvest crowds are lightest.

When is the best time to propose in the Eastern Townships?

Season What to expect Best spots
Summer (June to August) Warm lakes, long evenings, busiest weekends North Hatley, Magog waterfront, vineyards
Fall (mid-September to mid-October) Peak foliage, crisp days, very popular Mont-Orford, Coaticook bridge, Wine Route
Winter (December to March) Snow, ski season, cozy inns, early sunsets Lakeside inns, Mont-Orford, Sutton
Spring (April to May) Quiet, muddy trails, cheaper rooms Abbey grounds, village walks, inn dinners

If you're planning a holiday-season proposal, the Townships work well as a December getaway. Book inns early, because Christmas and New Year's weekends fill quickly, and expect to propose indoors or close to it after about 4:30 p.m. when it gets dark.

How far are the Eastern Townships from Montreal and Toronto?

Magog and the Lake Memphrémagog area are roughly an hour to an hour and a half from Montreal by car along Autoroute 10, depending on traffic. From Toronto, it's a long day's drive, so most couples coming from Ontario either fly or take the train to Montreal and rent a car there, or combine the trip with a few days in the city. If you're working through ideas for the city itself, see our guide to the best proposal spots in Montreal. For other Quebec escapes, we've also covered Mont-Tremblant and Quebec City.

Tips before you go

  • Scout the spot. If you can, visit the day before, at the same time of day, so you know where the light falls and where people tend to stop.
  • Check seasonal hours. Parks, vineyards and the Foresta Lumina walk all change hours and programming through the year.
  • Know some French. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, but the region is mostly francophone. A little French goes a long way when you're asking a server or a photographer for help.
  • Protect the ring. Lakes, gorges and lookouts have one thing in common: things dropped there are hard to get back. Keep the ring zipped away until the moment, and open the box with it facing you.
  • Get the size close. If it's a surprise, our guide on finding her ring size without spoiling the surprise covers a few tricks that work.

Eastern Townships proposal FAQ

What is the most romantic town in the Eastern Townships?

North Hatley is the usual answer. It's a small village at the north end of Lake Massawippi with a harbour, galleries, restaurants and two well-known lakeside inns, which makes it easy to pair a proposal with a weekend away.

Can you propose on the Coaticook suspension bridge?

Yes, the bridge is open to park visitors during operating hours. It's 169 metres long and sways slightly, so it suits couples who are comfortable with heights. Keep the ring secured until you stop walking.

When is fall colour season in the Eastern Townships?

Foliage generally peaks from mid-September to mid-October, depending on elevation and the year's weather. Mountain areas like Mont-Orford and Sutton tend to turn a little earlier than the valleys.

How far is the Eastern Townships from Montreal?

Magog and Lake Memphrémagog are roughly an hour to an hour and a half's drive east of Montreal on Autoroute 10, which makes the region a realistic day trip or an easy weekend away.

Is Mont-Mégantic good for a stargazing proposal?

It can be. The area is an International Dark Sky Reserve, so on clear nights the stars are exceptional. Night access is limited to certain evenings and programs, so check the park's schedule, dress warmly and have a backup date in case of cloud.
